Angels Fall
Reece Gilmore is running for her life. A promising Boston chef, she is celebrating a new job with friends in a restaurant, when it is suddenly invaded by masked gunmen. Reece is shot and as she lapses into unconsciousness, she sees her best friend brutally murdered. The sole survivor of the restaurant massacre, Reece is subsequently haunted by nightmares and panic attacks that won’t stop. She flees Boston, seeking peace after the tragedy that has so terribly impacted on her life and sets out on a cross-country road trip.
Ultimately, Reece winds up in the small town of Angel’s Fist, Wyoming. She takes a job as a cook in a local diner and settles into town life. Unfortunately, Reece cannot find the peace she so desperately needs. While hiking along a mountain trail, Reece sees a violent argument take place between an unknown man and woman. As she watches in horror, the woman is strangled and Reece races down the trail to get help from local author, Jamison Brody.
When Reece and Brody return to the spot where the murder had taken place, however, they do not see anyone and do not find a body. In fact, there are no signs at all that anything of a violent nature had taken place in that location. Nevertheless, Reece and Brody report the incident to Sheriff Richard Marsden, who launches an investigation that fails to find any evidence of a crime.
Because of the lack of evidence and in view of her tragic past, neither the sheriff nor any of the townspeople, with the exception of Brody, believe that Reece actually witnessed a murder. Certain of what she saw, however, Reece launches her own investigation. Increasingly, Reece becomes the target of strange “ attacks" that escalate from minor annoyances to outright dangerous situations. Reece, with Brody’s help, has to find out exactly what happened to the woman on the trail before she ends up dead herself.
Nora Roberts is one of today’s most prolific authors, whose novels inevitably top the best sellers’ list. Her stories succeed, however, not because they are long on plot. Indeed, as the main characters themselves point out, Angels Fall’s plot is similar to that of the old Ingrid Bergman movie “Gaslight" (A husband tries to drive his wife crazy and into an insane asylum in order to get his hands on her inheritance). Rather, Ms. Roberts’ strength lies in her ability to draw strong and appealing characters. Reece Gilmore is a damaged heroine who rises above the tragedy of her past and the danger of her present to find a murderer. Jamison Brody is a reluctant hero, who ably supports Reece in her quest to find justice with the right combination of strength, sensitivity and macho. Together, they are as appealing a couple as any that have previously been found in Ms. Roberts’ novels.
